Ep 16: Flower Vase Rock and Wild Boar Ditch on Little Liu Qiu Island in Pingtung
From Dongang, we take a boat over to Little Liu Qiu Island. It costs about NT410 per passenger, and an additional NT100 for the scooter. The ferry leaves every hour in the morning (first ferry at 7am) and every 1½ hours in the afternoon, depending on the season. It’s a short but choppy boat ride away. For those prone to sea-sickness, be sure to take precaution. As the direction of the boat goes against the waves, it can be quite a roller-coaster ride.
After finally setting foot on Little Liu Qiu, Joanne exchanges her scooter for an electric bike. The government on the island makes a conscious effort to keep things eco-friendly and encourages the use of electric scooters as opposed to scooters that run on petrol. Also, there is only ONE petrol station on the island, compared to the numerous electrical charging stations at every scenic point. Therefore, making it much more convenient to get around on electricity instead. Electric scooters (half/full day NT150/300) can be rented as soon as you get off the ferry at the spiffy new dock.
If you’re not confident of riding, you’ll be glad to find that the island is only 9km around so you could easily walk it in a day. This pretty coral island offers more than enough sea vistas, convoluted caves, sandy beaches, odd rock formations and temples (over 100) to keep you happy for a long, long day, or two, so the next time you are in Tainan, do consider making a pitstop over at this island!
